Day 16: What your lens saw

Today’s prompt is to write a curtal sonnet.

DAD, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, STOP RIGHT HERE. YOU MUST WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW. I AM PUTTING MY TRUST IN YOU.

Others, please scroll down.

Through silhouetted fronds, your lens saw sliced-up sky.
Its strips of red papaya, mango. In the blue—
now navy—now near-black—of such an ample bowl
that all can feast—who wriggle, scamper, swim, or fly.
You caught the colour-flavours dropping into view
as fast as mid-air grapefruit from its tree, juice-full.

Dear Dad, tonight we watched the video you caught.
Why were you in a hurry to fast-forward through
the artsy-craftsy parts, you called them? Most of all
you wished you’d stuck to showing us. More people shots.
But Dad—the sky was you.

Alana–A shiver ran down my spine when I read “the sky was you”. The love. The love image those four words hold has left me speechless.
Wish you a whole lot of love–you have the words to pay it forward.

I love the use of colour and the way the focus of the lens changes.

Congratulations on being featured, Alana! This is such a beautiful poem. That line at the end grabbed me by the throat. Happy birthday to your father!💜

This made me think of my dad, who was an amateur photographer and did slide shows of the photos he took on various trips abroad with my mom (and sometimes also with my brother and me as well) at the home for old ladies where my grandmother lived.

Your dad is lucky to have an April birthday so that he gets a poem every year. 🙂 I’m pretty sure that at least one year before you said so at the start: “DAD, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, STOP RIGHT HERE.” Here’s to your and your dad’s artsy-craftsy parts! And how lovely that a present for him got you featured. Congratulations all around.
